OpenAI is moving deeper into the hardware world, and Samsung could be one of the companies helping it get there. The ChatGPT maker is developing its own AI chips while expanding its relationship with the South Korean technology giant. The partnership could give OpenAI access to the advanced semiconductor technology needed to keep up with the explosive demand for AI computing.

The companies are already working together in several areas, although OpenAI has clarified that there is no newly announced deal. The semiconductor relationship could become more important as OpenAI develops custom hardware. In June, OpenAI unveiled its first custom AI chip, known as Jalapeno, designed with Broadcom to handle AI inference workloads. TSMC is expected to manufacture the chips, while Samsung and SK Hynix have separately signed agreements linked to supplying memory for OpenAI’s Stargate data centre project.

The push reflects a much bigger challenge facing AI companies: powerful models require enormous amounts of computing power and memory.
