During the state visit of President Xi Jinping of the People’s Republic of China to South Africa, both nations have agreed to enhance their bilateral cooperation, focusing on areas such as education and training, as well as digital technologies. This agreement was announced by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa on the occasion of President Xi Jinping’s fourth state visit to South Africa, which coincided with the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries.
President Ramaphosa highlighted the longstanding and strengthening relationship between South Africa and China, evolving into a comprehensive strategic partnership supported by 10-year strategic programs of cooperation. The common goals of economic growth, development, and global prosperity have facilitated collaboration in various areas, including international politics, trade, investment, infrastructure development, science, innovation, and education.
This commitment to cooperation in education and technology is not a new development. During President Xi’s state visit to South Africa in 2018, China pledged a $14.7 billion investment in the South African economy, with a portion allocated to the science and technology sector. The partnership reflects shared beliefs in leveraging science, technology, and innovation for effective growth and development. President Ramaphosa emphasized the importance of science, technology, and innovation as integral components of South Africa’s National Development Plan, contributing to economic growth, competitiveness, and social development. The focus remains on fostering a vibrant knowledge economy, promoting entrepreneurship, and strengthening relationships among research organizations, universities, industry, and civil society. These efforts aim to develop human capital, address demographic imbalances, and increase research output in South Africa.
