Huawei has officially launched its groundbreaking Mate XT trifold phone outside of China, marking a significant milestone in foldable technology. The device, which features a dual-hinge design allowing for three different screen configurations, comes with a premium price tag of €3,499 (approximately $3,660). However, like other Huawei smartphones, it will not offer official support for Google apps and services.
First introduced in China in September 2024, the Mate XT boasts an innovative display that can function as a 6.4-inch phone when closed, a 10.2-inch tablet when fully unfolded, and a 7.9-inch screen in its partially open state. Its ultra-slim form factor, measuring just 3.6mm at its thinnest point, sets a new standard in foldable design. This makes it even thinner than the upcoming Oppo Find N5, which, despite being marketed as the “world’s thinnest” foldable, only features a single hinge.
Performance-wise, the Mate XT is powered by a 5,600mAh battery, expected to provide sufficient endurance even with its larger screen configurations. The device supports both wired and wireless charging. It also features an advanced camera system with a 50-megapixel main sensor, alongside 12-megapixel ultrawide and periscope lenses. However, its biggest limitation remains the lack of Google services, including the Play Store, due to ongoing trade restrictions. While Huawei has been transitioning towards its HarmonyOS Next operating system, this model still runs on an Android-based EMUI software.
Despite its premium pricing, the Mate XT is being rolled out selectively in global markets. Currently, it is confirmed for release in Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Mexico. While further expansions are anticipated, the device is not expected to launch in the UK or the US in the immediate future. Huawei is offering the device in a single high-end configuration featuring 16GB of RAM and 1TB of internal storage.
Alongside the Mate XT, Huawei has introduced several other products, including the FreeArc open-ear earbuds, the Band 10 fitness tracker, and the MatePad Pro 13.2 tablet equipped with a matte OLED display. With these launches, the company continues to push forward in the tech industry, despite the challenges posed by global trade restrictions and software limitations.
