- Thousands of X users faced major outages Monday, with service disruptions peaking at over 40,000 reported issues across the app and website.
- A prolonged outage began at noon, affecting users primarily along the U.S. coasts and lasting more than an hour.
- Elon Musk attributed the incident to a large-scale cyberattack, suggesting involvement by a coordinated group or nation-state.
Thousands of X users experienced significant service disruptions on Monday following a series of outages that affected the social media platform throughout the morning and early afternoon. The interruptions left many unable to access the app or website, sparking widespread complaints and speculation about the cause.
Reports of issues surged early in the day, with the first spike in outages occurring around 6 a.m. Eastern Time, followed by another wave at 10 a.m. According to data from Downdetector.com, more than 40,000 users were impacted during the peak of the disruptions. A more prolonged outage began shortly after noon, lasting over an hour and causing the most severe disruptions along both the East and West coasts of the United States.
Tracking data indicated that the bulk of the problems—56%—were associated with the X app, while 33% of users encountered difficulties with the platform’s website. The outages disrupted routine usage and sparked concerns about the platform’s reliability, particularly given the scale and timing of the incident.
Shortly after the disruptions, X owner Elon Musk suggested the platform had been the target of a large-scale cyberattack. He characterized the event as unusually sophisticated, involving substantial resources and potentially pointing to a coordinated effort by an organized group or even a nation-state. The company has not released further technical details or confirmed the source of the alleged attack.
Monday’s outage is the latest in a series of technical challenges faced by X. In March 2023, when the platform was still known as Twitter, users encountered a similar disruption in service. That incident saw widespread issues, including broken links, login failures, and image loading problems. The recurrence of such outages continues to raise questions about the platform’s infrastructure and its ability to withstand both routine and targeted disruptions.
