Chinese automaker BYD has introduced a new battery and charging system capable of adding nearly 470 kilometers (292 miles) of driving range in just five minutes. The breakthrough was demonstrated on its new Han L sedan, positioning the company at the forefront of EV charging speed and setting a new benchmark for the industry. Sales of vehicles equipped with the technology are set to begin in April, starting with the Han L and the Tang L SUV.
This ultra-fast charging capability narrows the convenience gap between electric and combustion engine vehicles, targeting one of the main concerns among potential EV buyers—lengthy charging times. With the ability to replenish a car’s range in the same time it takes to fill a gas tank, BYD’s latest advancement could accelerate the transition to electric mobility, particularly in markets where driving range and refueling speed remain key factors.
The technology is built on BYD’s new Super e-Platform, which will serve as the foundation for many of its upcoming electric models. In addition to ultra-fast charging, the platform boosts performance, enabling vehicles to accelerate from 0 to 100 kilometers per hour in just two seconds. BYD plans to support the system with a dedicated network of over 4,000 charging stations tailored to the new infrastructure requirements.
As the global EV market grows increasingly competitive, BYD’s innovation intensifies its rivalry with Tesla. BYD’s new charging speeds surpass Tesla’s Superchargers, which currently offer up to 275 kilometers of range in 15 minutes. Although Tesla maintains a broader global charging network, BYD’s rapid rise is reshaping the industry landscape, especially in China, the world’s largest auto market.
The announcement caps a strong start to 2025 for BYD. The company, which exclusively manufactures hybrid and electric vehicles, sold more than 318,000 passenger cars last month, marking a 161% increase from the previous year. Holding nearly 15% of China’s auto market share, BYD’s momentum is bolstered by advancements in both battery technology and driver-assistance systems, signaling its growing dominance in the EV sector.
