- A massive explosion struck Russia’s 51st GRAU ammo depot in the Vladimir Region, prompting a state of emergency and evacuation of nearby settlements.
- Russia’s defense ministry blamed the blast on improper handling of explosives; four people were reported injured.
- The site reportedly stored up to 100,000 tons of weaponry, making it one of the largest munitions facilities in the country.
A powerful explosion tore through a Russian ammunition depot on Tuesday, triggering a state of emergency in the Kirzhach district of the Vladimir Region, northeast of Moscow. The blast occurred at the 51st Main Missile and Artillery Directorate (GRAU) Arsenal, one of the largest munitions facilities operated by Russia’s defense ministry. Initial video footage shared on social media showed towering smoke plumes and fireballs rising from the facility, over 300 miles from the Ukrainian border.
The Kremlin later attributed the incident to a fire resulting from the mishandling of explosive materials. According to Russia’s defense ministry, the fire ignited inside a military warehouse, causing stored ammunition to detonate. While initial reports suggested no fatalities, regional officials later confirmed four people were injured. Multiple nearby settlements were evacuated as a precaution.
Ukraine has not issued any official statement regarding the explosion. However, its Center for Countering Disinformation stated on Telegram that the depot is believed to house around 100,000 tons of munitions, including artillery shells and missiles. Although Business Insider could not independently verify these claims, the scale of the blast and subsequent secondary explosions raised concerns over the safety protocols at Russian military sites.
This incident adds to a growing list of ammunition depot disasters in Russia. A similar explosion in the same region in June 2022 left four dead during unloading operations. Tuesday’s explosion again raises questions about safety standards and operational discipline within the Russian armed forces, especially amid the heightened tensions and ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
Russian authorities have pledged to investigate the cause of the fire and hold any responsible personnel accountable. As of now, cleanup efforts are underway, and the affected region remains under emergency regulations. The incident underscores ongoing vulnerabilities in Russia’s military infrastructure, particularly in high-risk facilities handling large quantities of explosive ordnance.
