Is the next viral AI filter built on stolen creativity? A coalition of prominent YouTubers has expanded their legal crusade against big tech by naming Snap as the latest defendant in a high-stakes copyright battle. The creators allege the social media giant scraped their content without permission to train the algorithms powering commercial features like the “Imagine Lens.”

• YouTubers are suing Snap for copyright infringement
• The suit alleges videos were used to train AI
• Snap joins Nvidia and Meta as defendants

Central to the complaint is the accusation that Snap exploited a massive video-language dataset known as HD-VILA-100M which was intended strictly for academic research. Lawyers for the plaintiffs argue that the company bypassed YouTube’s technological safeguards and service terms to repurpose this protected material for commercial gain. This alleged workaround effectively laundered millions of videos to feed the data-hungry models required for generative text-to-image tools.

• Snap allegedly used the HD-VILA-100M dataset
• The data was licensed only for academic research
• Plaintiffs claim Snap bypassed YouTube restrictions

Leading the charge is the production team behind the h3h3 channel which commands over five million subscribers alongside niche creators from the golfing community like MrShortGame Golf and Golfholics. Together these plaintiffs represent a collective audience of roughly six million viewers who may have unwittingly contributed to Snap’s proprietary technology. They are seeking statutory damages and a permanent injunction to halt any further use of their intellectual property.

• H3h3 and golf channels are leading the class action
• The plaintiffs represent 6.2 million subscribers
• The suit seeks damages and a permanent injunction

This legal action is merely the latest skirmish in a widening war between human creators and artificial intelligence developers. The nonprofit Copyright Alliance estimates that over seventy infringement cases are currently winding through the courts as authors, artists, and publishers fight to define the boundaries of fair use in the digital age. Snap now joins a growing list of tech heavyweights including Nvidia and Meta who are facing similar accusations from this specific group of video makers.

• Over 70 copyright cases face AI companies
• Creators are fighting to define fair use boundaries
• Snap joins a list of defendants including Nvidia

Courtrooms have become the new battleground for defining the future of generative AI with mixed results so far. Judges have previously ruled in favor of corporations in certain disputes involving authors while companies like Anthropic have chosen to settle financially to resolve claims. The outcome of this specific class action could set a critical precedent regarding whether “research” datasets can legally serve as the foundation for billion-dollar commercial products.

• Previous AI copyright rulings have been mixed
• Anthropic recently settled similar claims
• The case challenges the use of research data
