- Counterfeit Chinese profiles thrive on X, controlled by foreign entities aiming to sow discord in US politics.
- Despite exposure and legal actions, these accounts persist on X, with some even retaining verified status.
- Chinese propaganda tactics mirror those of Russia, exploiting existing divisions within the US, as highlighted by Microsoft’s findings.
Analysis reveals that counterfeit Chinese profiles thrive on X, formerly known as Twitter. These accounts, controlled by foreign entities aiming to sow discord and sway US politics, persist on the platform despite exposure by other social media platforms or legal actions. The Washington Post’s investigation highlights that while Meta, owner of Facebook, and Google’s YouTube collaborate with external researchers and law enforcement to combat foreign interference, X, under Elon Musk’s ownership since 2022, remains largely disengaged from such efforts.
Out of 150 artificial influence accounts identified by Meta in public reports last year, 136 were still active on X as of the latest assessment. Some even retained X’s blue check verification, misleading users into believing their legitimacy. The Post’s review underscores that Chinese propaganda mirrors Russian tactics, exploiting existing divisions within the US. Microsoft’s findings from September further indicate the rapid expansion of propaganda across various platforms and languages.
