Nvidia’s $12.9 Billion Hugging Face Bet Could Reshape the AI Race

What would make Nvidia spend $12.9 billion on a company generating only a fraction of that in annual revenue? The answer could reveal where the world’s most valuable AI chipmaker believes the next phase of the artificial intelligence boom is heading. Nvidia has reportedly agreed to acquire Hugging Face, a major home for open-source AI models and datasets, in what would rank among its largest acquisitions.

• Nvidia has reportedly agreed to buy Hugging Face for $12.9 billion.
• The deal would be one of Nvidia’s biggest acquisitions.
• Hugging Face is a major platform for open-source AI development.

The reported acquisition would give Nvidia greater influence over the software and models being built around AI, rather than keeping its focus on the chips powering them. Hugging Face hosts thousands of open-source models and datasets used by developers and businesses, giving Nvidia a potentially powerful position across both the hardware and software sides of the AI industry.

• Hugging Face connects developers with open-source AI models and datasets.
• Nvidia could gain a stronger foothold in AI software.
• The move would expand Nvidia’s role beyond GPUs.

The price also stands out. Hugging Face was valued at $4.5 billion during a 2023 funding round backed by Nvidia, Google and Salesforce. The reported purchase price would represent a dramatic increase, particularly compared with Hugging Face’s reported annualised revenue of about $150 million. Nvidia had also reportedly considered a $500 million investment last year at a $7 billion valuation.

• Hugging Face was valued at $4.5 billion in 2023.
• Its reported annualised revenue is around $150 million.
• Nvidia had previously considered investing at a $7 billion valuation.

The timing may be just as significant as the price. OpenAI, Anthropic and other AI companies are increasingly exploring alternatives to Nvidia’s hardware, including developing their own chips. Buying Hugging Face could give Nvidia another way to remain deeply embedded in the AI ecosystem as competition moves beyond the race to build faster processors.

• Major AI companies are exploring their own chips.
• Nvidia faces potential pressure from customers seeking alternatives.
• Hugging Face could strengthen Nvidia’s position in open-source AI.

The reported deal also arrives as Nvidia signals confidence that AI spending still has room to grow. The company has forecast a 70% increase in revenue next fiscal year and said it has $18 billion committed to equity investments through fiscal 2027. For Nvidia, Hugging Face could therefore be more than an acquisition. It could be a bet that controlling part of the AI development ecosystem will matter almost as much as controlling the hardware beneath it.

• Nvidia expects substantial revenue growth next fiscal year.
• The company has committed billions to AI-related investments.
• The Hugging Face deal could deepen Nvidia’s control of the AI ecosystem.
