StarCraft is returning to the battlefield, although this time players will not be commanding armies from above. Blizzard has revealed a new open-world shooter set in the iconic sci-fi universe, giving fans their first look at a project that could finally succeed where previous StarCraft shooters failed.

• Blizzard unveiled the project at BlizzCon 2026
• The game is an open-world shooter set in the StarCraft universe
• Players will experience the conflict from the ground level

The project is being led by Dan Hay, the former boss of Far Cry, who has previously been linked to an unannounced StarCraft shooter. Its debut trailer shows Blizzard is taking the franchise in a very different direction, with a focus on exploration, combat and surviving the dangers of a universe shaped by interstellar warfare.

• Dan Hay is leading the new project
• The game will move beyond traditional StarCraft gameplay
• The experience is designed around ground-level action

Blizzard says the new game will respect StarCraft’s history while pushing the series into new territory. Rather than overseeing huge armies in a strategy game, players will step directly into the conflict, facing the danger and chaos from the perspective of someone fighting on the ground.

• The game will build on StarCraft’s established universe
• Players will experience battles from a closer perspective
• Exploration is expected to play an important role

The announcement is particularly significant because Blizzard has already tried to turn StarCraft into a shooter twice. Both StarCraft: Ghost and the project known as Ares were ultimately canceled, leaving the franchise without the shooter spin-off that fans had long anticipated.

• StarCraft: Ghost was previously canceled
• Blizzard also abandoned the Ares project
• The new game marks another attempt at a StarCraft shooter

The latest reveal suggests Blizzard has not given up on the idea. With an open world, a major developer at the helm and a franchise built around some of gaming’s most recognisable conflicts, the new StarCraft shooter could become one of Blizzard’s most intriguing projects yet. The biggest mystery now is how far it will take the series beyond its strategy roots.

• Blizzard is returning to the StarCraft shooter concept
• The open-world format could transform the franchise
• More details about the game are still under wraps
