Deutsche Telekom, the parent company of T-Mobile, has announced plans to launch a new AI-driven smartphone powered by Perplexity Assistant. Revealed at Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, the device will integrate advanced AI tools, including Google Cloud AI, ElevenLabs, and Picsart, under the company’s proprietary “Magenta AI” system. The AI phone is set to be officially unveiled later this year.
The device is designed to operate primarily through voice commands, eliminating the need for traditional app-based navigation. First introduced as a concept at MWC 2024, the AI phone promises seamless automation of tasks such as booking flights, reserving restaurants, and shopping online. Its capabilities align with the emerging category of “large action model” devices, such as the Rabbit R1, which aim to streamline digital interactions without requiring users to switch between multiple applications.
Beyond the AI phone itself, Deutsche Telekom is expanding its AI ecosystem by incorporating Perplexity’s AI-powered search engine and other tools into the MeinMagenta app. This application, already available on various devices, will offer some of the same AI-driven functionalities. Perplexity has also recently launched an Android app, further enhancing its accessibility across platforms.
While specific details about the AI phone’s hardware remain limited, early images suggest a budget to midrange Android device. It features a simple design with prominent top and bottom bezels and a distinctive pink sleep/wake button. The company has yet to confirm additional specifications or pricing details.
Deutsche Telekom plans to release the AI phone in the second half of 2024. Meanwhile, this summer, several AI-powered features from Google Cloud AI, ElevenLabs, and Picsart will be integrated into the MeinMagenta app, allowing users on other smartphones to experience the benefits of Magenta AI. The announcement signals a growing shift towards AI-centric mobile experiences, potentially reshaping how users interact with their devices.
