More than 12 million YouTube channels vanished in the first nine months of 2025, sparking a wave of panic among creators who feared their livelihoods were being erased by machines they could not reason with. The sudden purge ignited a firestorm across the platform, raising questions about whether YouTube’s new AI moderation system had crossed a line.

• Massive spike in terminated channels
• Widespread creator panic
• New AI moderation under scrutiny

Creators had been sounding alarms for weeks. Some reported their videos were age restricted after the AI misinterpreted simple background laughter. Others said reaction videos were flagged for “child safety” while the original clips remained untouched. Despite the pushback, YouTube’s CEO said the company would continue using AI to enforce policy, arguing it offered better accuracy and scale.

• AI misinterpreting harmless content
• Reaction videos punished over originals
• YouTube leadership standing firm

The outcry grew louder when animator Nani Josh revealed his 650,000 subscriber channel was terminated for “spam or scam” content he said never existed. He pointed to YouTube’s own transparency report, which confirmed more than 12 million terminations since January. His question quickly spread across the internet: could that many creators truly have violated policy, or was the system malfunctioning?

• Creator with major following suddenly removed
• Public challenge aimed at YouTube
• Millions of terminations raising doubts

For once, YouTube responded directly. The company said most of the recent bans were tied to a financial scam operation based in Southeast Asia. It stressed that terminated channels do not always represent individual creators and insisted Josh’s ban had been correctly upheld by human reviewers. The explanation did little to calm frustration among users who felt the appeals process only worked when a complaint went viral.

• YouTube blames large scale scam networks
• Distinction between channels and creators
• Ongoing distrust in appeals process

The controversy comes as AI enforcement continues to reshape how YouTube polices its platform. Some channels, like Pokémon creator SplashPlate, have been restored after public pressure. Others remain permanently removed with little clarity. The debate now centers on a larger issue: whether a platform built on creativity can survive a moderation system that moves faster than humans can keep up.

• Some creators reinstated after public attention
• Others remain permanently removed
• Growing debate over AI’s role in content moderation
